This year's prevailing theme of the gift weaves previous ones of freedom from/to, forgiveness and relationship through the challenge of responding to the freely offered grace of God. Muddling the issue is doing so in the face of the Way of the Cross that is easily misconstrued as dumb suffering culminating in a type of twisted divine hostage exchange and submission to an insatiably masochistic God. But if those are the reasons for the Cross, mercy is condemned.
